Malabar in South India had been a hotbed of anti colonial struggles. A number of Mappila Muslims of the area laid thier lives for the cause of freedom of the land from the Europeans. In 19221 a huge struggle broke out in Malabar in the name of Khilafat movement and it became so strong that the British even thought of leaving Malabar . Varian Kunnath Kunhahammad Haji was the the most prominent leader of the struggle in 1921
